Production
In the village of Chipping Cleghorn, a strange announcement appears in the local newspaper: a murder is to take place that evening at Little Paddocks.  At the appointed time, a curious crowd, half-expecting some form of elaborate illusion, begins to gather.  But when the villagers are plunged into darkness, events take a more sinister turn...

'A Murder Is Announced', based on the novel by Agatha Christie, was the final episode in a four-part series broadcast on ITV 1.  The other Miss Marple mysteries adapted for the screen - each with an all-star cast - were 'The Body in the Library', 'The Murder at the Vicarage' and '4.50 from Paddington'.  Following in the footsteps of Gracie Fields and Joan Hickson, among others, Geraldine McEwan assumed the title role of Christie's veteran super-sleuth.  The mutli-million pound dramatizations injected some 1950s style into the proceedings and gave the plots a more modern flavour.
