| Love Hurts was
created by well-established writing partnership Laurence Marks
and Maurice Gran. This comedy-drama soon became one of the
most popular television series of the early 1990s, and made Zoë
a household name. Zoe later remarked that she and co-star
Adam Faith had been 'astounded by its success'. In Love
Hurts, Tessa Piggott gives up her high-flying city job and
expensive lifestyle to become the director of a small Third
World charity called S.E.E.D. Having been unceremoniously
dumped by her long-term partner, Tessa renounces men in a bid to
steer clear of the kind of trouble they have previously caused
her. Fate has other ideas, however, and when self-made
millionaire Frank Carver takes a shine to her, Tessa struggles
to maintain her resolve. After a will-they, won't-they
relationship, Frank and Tessa eventually marry and have a
baby. But their various ups and downs, and those
experienced by their family and friends, are a reminder that
sometimes love hurts. |

Notes |
| The pairing
of an acclaimed stage actress and a former popstar may
seem unlikely, nevertheless it resulted in an excellent
acting partnership. As Zoe explained during an
interview after the first series of Love Hurts was
broadcast, 'when I met Adam [Faith], I thought,
"Well, here's a very pretty chap, cheeky and
naughty," and I thought the chemistry would be
brilliant. I came from a completely different
world than he did; I was a "serious
actress,"... and he came from a showbiz world of
buffers, chauffeurs, and sports cars.' |
Much of the filming for Love Hurts took place in Africa,
Russia and Israel, as Tessa travelled abroad as part of
her charity work. After filming several episodes
in Africa, Zoe returned there in
1992 to report for Comic
Relief. Interviewed
shortly after her trip, she commented, 'Millions
live in shacks made out of paper, dustbin lids, plastic,
anything they can get their hands on. They have no work,
the crime rate is enormous, disease is huge, dead dogs
lie in ditches, and sanitation is appalling. Half the
population is made up of kids under 15, and although
it's hot, their hands are freezing and their noses
running because of illnesses. You feel so helpless. Yet
in the middle of it all is this extraordinary woman with
incredible commitment and energy. It's awesome to know
there are thousands like her vehemently committed to
helping others. That's what I found most moving.' |
Zoë had previously starred alongside Jane Lapotaire in
a production of the play Piaf. |
Peter Polycarpou, who stars in another Marks and Gran
creation, Birds
of a Feather, sings the title song. It was
released as a single in 1992, and reached number 21 in
the charts. Composer Alan Hawkshaw's music for
Love Hurts was nominated for a BAFTA award the following
year. |
In 1993, Zoe received a Best Actress BAFTA award
nomination for her portrayal of Tessa Piggot. |
