| Viola and her twin
brother, Sebastian, have been shipwrecked off the coast of
Illyria, and each believes the other to have drowned. Once
ashore, and with the help of a sea captain, Viola disguises
herself as a boy and assumes the name Cesario, entering the
service of the Duke of Orsino. The Duke sends 'Cesario' to
woo Olivia on his behalf, but Olivia falls in love with the
servant. Meanwhile, Antonio has come to the aid of Viola's
brother, whom Olivia mistakes for Cesario. She and
Sebastian are then secretly married, much to the latter's
bemusement! As true identities are revealed, Orsino
realises he loves Viola. A comedy of mistaken identity. |
Notes |
| The same cast
performed She Stoops To Conquer at the Ashcroft Theatre the
following week. The theatre programme for Twelfth Night
notes that Zoe and her fellow performers 'are playing together
over a total period of eight months - the first permanent
company to be based in Cambridge since 1945'. |
